Apart from the posh seats everyone was crammed together with no leg or elbow room and little padding in the seats. When I say flea pit I mean it, that cinema hadn't been updated since the 50's, it still had gas lighting and the 3 rear rows were extra posh seating that you paid extra for. It was a small town in Dorset and Saturday afternoon cinema was a huge deal for us kids. I saw this at the local flea pit in 1978. I know Violet was probably added to make the initial journey feel like it had higher stakes but creating a single female Sandalford survior who's only noteable role was to be carried off by a hawk always struck younger me as kinda unjust. Other changes like having the cast (like Bluebell who I liked very much in the book) made sense because I had already noticed movies made from books tend to cut characters. In the book all the Sandalford defectors make it to the down alive (and were all bucks) but the movie added a single female bunny who dies at the halfway point of their first journey. Like timeline stuff regarding how Holly manages to get imprisoned in Efrafa before meeting up with Hazel and company (serves to cut out the initial expedition for time) or the weird occurrence of Violet. Later I became just as keen on the book but some of the changes between adaptations I found confusing as a youngster. The only part that really got me was Holly's story when the bunnies were suffocating underground. I wonder what my parents must have thought of little 5 year old me engrossed in the movie time and again. We never owned a copy as kids but I must have rented the vhs a ridiculous number of times as a kid.
